Pet microchipping vs pet insurance: what's the difference?
They sound related but do very different jobs. Here's a plain-English breakdown.
Microchipping is identification
A microchip is a permanent ID linked to a registry. It helps reunite lost pets — it is not insurance and pays no vet bills.
Insurance is cover for costs
Pet insurance helps with eligible vet fees and conditions covered by your policy. It does not identify your pet.
They complement each other
UK dogs are legally required to be microchipped. Insurance is optional cover — many owners use both.
Sources & references
Factual claims are referenced to official UK sources. Always check current rules.
- UK microchipping law: Dogs in the UK are legally required to be microchipped and registered to the keeper's details. Cat microchipping requirements are being introduced — check current rules at gov.uk.
Pet identification, lost-pet recovery & vet support
Pet24 links your pet's microchip and ID details to a lost-pet recovery network, with qualifying emergency veterinary support subject to Pet24's terms. It's identification and protection — separate from regulated pet insurance.
